What is your "image" of God?

Tim W. (@phoggy) 8 years, 11 months ago

When you think of “GOD” what exactly IS that to you? Everyone has an image of what/who God is, whether they mean to or not. Even atheists have an image of a God that they do not believe in. So what is it for you? Is there 1 God, or many gods? Is God a “personal” one like Christ, or an impersonal force like nature, Tao, ect? A ruler like Yaweh, or a “friend” like Jesus? This question interests me because I often find people debating about whether or not there is a God, but I doubt very much that people are actually debating about the SAME God. In reality, I think that there are 6 billion “Gods” on planet earth because no 2 people “see” the same God in their mind. God is as much our creation, as we are His Creation (if we even ARE a creation). I think it’s obvious to say that no one can truly fathom what/who God is, but I think everyone has a Default God that they regularly picture when discussing the matter. So what is it for you?

@tatler, Making sweet love, not fucking.

How is that picture related by the way?

If anyone is genuinely interested in the ‘concept’ of God please read the ‘Conversations with God’ books 1-3 by Neale D Walsch. They contain the most profound truths pertaining to many subjects but the central theme is the human condition and our relationship with ‘God’. And forget religion – as far as modern religion goes these books send out a clear message;
Religion = separation. What we need as a race is harmony and unity.
If you haven’t already, read these books and prepare for Epiphany. Again and again.

@manimal, Making sweet love is nice.
I see an interpretation of this picture as mother nature being a vital part to our universe, vagina if will, being fucked by man.
I also think this is an expectational piece of art work

@johnharris67, I’ve read CWG. All of them. It was a mind-blowing experience reading those books and I cannot decide whether I would be more shocked to know for certain that God actually spoke to that guy, or if it was completely made up. Either way, it’s amazing stuff. Challenged my beliefs significantly!

@phoggy,

As someone raised (and being raised) a Christian, I have difficulty believing all of the specifics mentioned in the Bible. It seems to me like the various sects of Christianity, and even other religions, assume things not in their holy books. For me, it seems impossible to be a true atheist. My heart and brain tell me there is something. Personally, I believe in the Christian ‘image’ of God. I’m not sure of the whole physical part of God, though. I definitely believe Jesus walked the Earth, as an embodiment of God; I think I see God more as a combination of characteristics than anything else. God is loving; God is kind. At the same time, God is harsh. God reflects his creation- the human condition is evident within the mythology of all Gods.

I think everyone believes in the same thing, it’s just the particulars that get people caught up. The fact that so many believe in something gives me faith that the something exists.

@johnharris67,

One of my all time favorite books (the trilogy that is).

It’s so simple, yet we manage to complicate it with religion and such.

God is love, God is life, God is the universe.

The biggest misconception is that God is a separate entity. God is everything. We are God.

That’s it.

@tatler, So you’re basically implying that penis is a mean aggressor and vagina is helpless and passive? That fucking = rape? That fucking is done for the sake of the penis and not of the vagina?

Way to go, mate…

The picture is a nice piece of art and its message is great, but I don’t see any connection to what was originally said.

God is just a word, and any image that comes up in my brain is entirely conditioned by previous life experiences. I suppose my point is that my “image” of god, and yours as well, only has the meaning that you give to it.

@phoggy, I think objectivity and subjectivity are synonymous, subjectivity simply means that everyones objectivity is unique.

@manimal, haha, that would be a crude way to look at it. But yes, If you really feel the need to apply rape to my metaphor. As human beings we do rape our natural resources at times, Unintentionally or intentionally. Taking more then we need. Eg excessive logging of rain forests or mining for such metals as gold. I don’t think the tree has a say in the short term weather it wants to be cut down or not

Ok. So….i have a more figurative image than this. But some times i dream im at a small table haveing a tea party with some one. His age and even gender changes…but i just KNOW it is god that i am makeing tea with. Some times its an old man in a loose toga. Or…..he looks like those paitings of jesus. Some times its gandi (i am sorry i cannot spell his name) or a nun. Or the mad hatter. Some times its a better version of my father (with out the drugs and drunkenness. More…peaceful…fatherly) and some times….its a stranger. Some one i never seen before. But i feel its god. I feel the wisdom, patience, kindness. I feel all these possitive things.

@stick2skript, this is an interesting one! Why do you suppose that God was appearing to you in all of these different forms? I once read about a man who had a near death experience and he was in the presence of The Light and it kept changing forms. It was Buddha, Jesus, male, female. This dream of yours reminded me of that. I never dream like this, but I think it’s fascinating to hear about people who have these experiences. Thanks for sharing!

@phoggy, God is much greater than words and image. God is life itself, all that which was, which is, & what will be. I like to think of God as the almighty sun.

Well. Im christian (with….a different out look) and the bible says man was made in his image. So god looks…like every body. We all have it. Little shards of us. So god can be who ever he wants to get his point across. What ever speaks to the person individually.
I often say “my god is the god of science and mystery” so ive dreamed god was a scientist, and ive dreamed he was sherloch holmes. I also view him as an artist. Ive dremt him with a smock and one of those spinning pottery wheels, pumping it around as he molds an animal. She he sets it on the ground, throws it into the air, sets it into water and it …comes to life. Ive drempt him put trees together one atom at a time. Combineing art and science. Ive drempt him be a woman…some times i dream im up in the clouds of a storm over the ocean and he is “conducting the thunder” like an orcestra with two twigs.and i looked down the eye of the storm and watched the wave tussle and dance and play.

Some times i dream god is a animal…or plant. Ive spoken to trees like they were companions because by the design of science, god made that tree.
God has no form, so god is every form.

There is some Gematria connected to this word G.O.D, but I won’t bother bringing it up here.
Gematria takes effort and study to understand, as well as everything else in life. And it takes years of devotion along with all the study and practice.

@stick2skript, that’s really amazing! Why do you suppose you have these dreams? Are you just an observer in them or are you actually communicating with God and are you consciously creating and choosing the various forms of God yourself? When I think of people being the image of God, I don’t ordinarily think of it in terms of appearance, but more from a functional aspect in that we all are Creators like God, but in a smaller scale. And whatever we create is just as much God’s Creation because every part of us is just an extension of him, but free and independent. So these images of God must be, to some extent, just a feedback of what it is you are projecting at that moment?

@phoggy, idream because i want to be with god. I want to …feel him close. Some times they are day dreams. Some times we talk. Some times i am just an awestruck audience of one. Taken aback by the wonder. The power. The beauty. If you could see his gaze (in my dreams of course) his eyes are blackish with the entire universe in his eyes. And they are soft, like a happy,loveing old man. Thats my image of god. In the simplest form. A happy old man.

I guess I’m really unromantic but I see God in physics descriptions of what we know about dark matter so far, applied to consciousness.

God is the singularity that exists in everything. It is an always present source within all things. It is where the stars, the protons, and your heart, draws its energy from. That’s my current view though I can’t say I believe it or understand it.
