Today I was up on one of my local mountain roads pushing my car a bit (I’m a huge gear head) as I felt some negative emotions building up. When I was coming down I was doing 70km’s around a tight left turn going downhill, there was a small patch of dirt and my rear right tire caught it and sent me into a drift and almost reached 90 degrees (thought I was gunna spin into a ditch) I know how to control my car really well and somehow managed to counter steer out of it. Well my heart was going to say the least but I wasn’t really scared or felt dumb afterwards. I actually felt incredibly alive and it put me in a meditative state of awareness after and now I feel great! Although I did learn my lesson, going downhill while shredding a sports car with tight turns isn’t the safest thing. From now on I’ll only hoon it going up the hill lol! What makes you HEthians feel alive and takes you out of the normal routine?
Anything active. Even just running.
The other week I went on a vacation where I white water rafted, rapelled down a mountain, zip lined over a valley, road a horse, and went down a hill in one of those huge plastic balls.
That shit made me feel alive. lol
@deepak87, I’m with you about that cold water, my most invigorating dip was in a lake of freshly melted glacier water on top of mount whitney… I was on top of the world, well at least the continental US
But i really feel alive flying down the highway on my motorcycle with my hands in the air; nothing comes close. well maybe some HALO skydiving
Whitewater and rock climbing, especially. The exhilaration you feel when you’re conquering a rapid or cleaning the crux of a climb, combined with the fear you feel when you fuck up and have to deal with risk management and danger. Also, exhaustion from activity or adverse conditions…when you feel like you’ve really done something, or fought through something.
For me it’s pulling something off that I didn’t know I was capable of, or learning a new skill, or simply becoming aware of something.
Just yesterday I got my head into a book on improving my memory. In short order I was able to remember long lists of words and numbers, and they stuck, something I figured I wasn’t capable of. So essentially I am getting intimate with an aspect of my brain function and am getting a real charge from it. Mainly I am excited and feeling alive because it has opened up a whole new world for me to explore, like finding a wormhole to another reality!
I’ve been surfing once but that first time gave me such a massive feeling of being alive. Paddling to my position in the waves and having these mountains on either side of me was just sweet. Then actually being able to catch a wave and stand up on the board, even sweeter. Oh man I really wanna go surfing again.
Today I was standing on a 15 foot wall and jumping into the ocean water in a small clear spot where there was no coral and that I did a few times before. I was ready to push myself. As I stood on top of the wall I decided I would jump and front flip in the air! I visualized it and getting past all the doubts and being scared (and scarred lol) I just.. jumped, and at that point it didn’t matter how bad it would hurt, if I landed over the coral or upside down, because now I did it anyway and was in the air fully present and alive. I landed pretty painfully but felt too good to care that much lol! Then did it a few more times a lot better each time. I have similar experiences to you occasionally, thinking you are gonna hurt yourself or fail badly and then living or showing yourself what you are truly capable of however it went is pretty surreal. :)
What makes me feel alive? I DO.
What methods do I use? I work out really hard on a daily basis. I make music, often sitting for hours on end just messing around with various melodies and parameters, playing live with my band is awesome too. I’m always doing spontaneous fun shit, constantly self-amusing. I also go do various fun activities with friends and relatives and whoever happens to be up for it, skydiving or stuff like that, at least once a month.
And sex, of course. Don’t overlook the basics, that’s where all the magic is.
@theskafish, Accord coupe V6 lowered with sticky tires. I’m thinking of selling it and getting an older BMW M3 or a Honda s2000 but I’m going to university here soon so I might just keep it for now and invest my spare money in something that will give some returns instead of depreciate lol.
@splashartist, that’s cool. I drive an ’00 Mustang GT (no money for mods, alas), but unfortunately I’ve had to drive it year-round since I don’t have a beater, and the bottom is all worn out from the winter weather. I figure it will be fun while it lasts though, I wish there were better cruising roads around here, it’s pretty suburban where I live, and in some directions it even gets urban quickly.
@splashartist, ’67 eh? Very nice!!!! I love the first generation of Mustangs. If I ever change my luck with money, I’d love to try one of my all time favorites, the ’67-’69 Shelby GT-500’s as well. And yea, she drinks fuel like I drink like a fish, so I don’t drive often……but when I do, I love it!
