Are you your body? What happens to your hand if it somehow gets cut off? Is it still yours?
Did you know that a boy lived till the age of 3 without a brain? Are you your brain? Are you your heart? What if you got a heart transplant? Is that other heart now yours?
Are these things you? Did you know that your cells die and that you would have gone through several completely new bodies in your lifetime? Are you really sure that you are your body?
Are you your thoughts? what happens when you stop thinking for brief moments? What happens when you sleep and you no longer identify yourself with your thoughts? How come every thought is of the same value, but you treat some as the truth of who you are and others get tossed to the side never to be remembered? Can you really be sure that you are your thoughts? Did you know that every sense of identity you’ve ever had has been from your thoughts? Can you be sure this identity is you? Why do you think that you always change as a ‘person’? Because your thoughts always change, some thoughts that you hold onto seem to fade as time goes on. The mind then finds another thought to cling to which you then start to believe. It seems so shallow does it not?
Are you your experience? Or are the experiences viewed by you? And you partake in the experiences? This can’t be you completely can it? So who are you? Who’s been aware this whole time of all of these things but itself cannot be seen? This hasn’t changed, only what has happened in existence has. Why cling on to your identity which is always changing? Where do you think suffering comes from? It can’t be that simple to see through can it?
This seems to be a question people actually fear. People live their lives trying to ignore that question. Don’t you want to know who you are? Don’t you want the truth? Don’t fear this. Self inquire, look within and not without. Looking outside seems to always fail.
Could it be that all problems are stemmed from this uncertainty? Why do you think you are always wanting something else? Why do you think there’s always a desire? What void are you trying to fill? Are you trying to find out who you are on the outside world? “maybe this new car will make me happy” “maybe this girl will make me happy” And although, these things do work for awhile. The happiness fades. What hole are you trying to fill? Could finding out who we are be the solution?
So who are you? This question should not be ignored.
@splashartist,Although, I don’t know what ‘nothingness’ is, that seems to be the answer, as nothing else is a more fitting answer to that question “who am I”?
I don’t think people actually ignore that question, everybody at least some point in their life comes across it. We always try to quench our thirst before we start to find out who we are because there are ways to satisfy our needs/wants but its a never ending quest to find out who we (ofc it ends when we die,at least I hope so!).
I know I’m in no way answering your question. But, like someone said,
“There’s no up, there’s no down, you’re in the middle, there’s no edges, it goes forever and you’re right there, swimming in this universal soup.”
@aditya, People do search, but mostly outside. It is quite easy to see. People seem to fear venturing inward, afraid to be alone. Where do you think loneliness comes from? This post was simply a tool to get people to start looking inward. This is it. You are this. Everything and nothing, up and down, black and white, good and bad. The whole. Until this is truly known in the heart then suffering will persist as something ‘you’ go through, rather then a happening that occurs in this. Words cannot describe this, it’s something you will have to come to know for yourself. “that which can be described as the Tao is not the eternal Tao”
@splashartist, you see the truth of who you are my friend. This is what we need to wake up and see. Without this realisation, the world will never heal itself to the dgree it is capable of. Till we take the resposibility, and share the truth with the world, or at least to the collective consciousness of which are part and whole of!
Are you the porn you watch or the drugs you take?
“What void are you trying to fill?” – That which I create.
I am the silent witness who watches the thoughts, experiences, and emotions. This is not him speaking (he doesn’t), but I can vouch for his (high) existence
@splashartist, All I know is that I am a center – a part of all directly influenced by all. Yet I am without form, as you have argued effectively. How can there be a center to something that has no form?
Makes sense to extrapolate that I am all. I am God becoming more complex, not only through expansion but through networking. Networking has taken off exponentially with the evolution of intelligent consciousness.
When I am still enough I can feel the universe. I listen, interpret and I in turn forge the will of Man.
I am denizen, disciple, associate, vindicator and king.
@splashartist, Just joined and I could not but help reply to this question…. ‘who are you?’.
Around the year 2000 I asked myself the same question, ‘who am I?’ and I started my investigation, starting with my dreams. I delved deep in my being so deep that I started having out-of-body experiences.
One day. or should I say one night, I left my body and I asked the Universal Mind ‘Who am I?’ the Universal Mind replied in a deep, rich voice, ‘You are me.’
@rickyferdon, The ego exists as far as the scientific understanding of the brain.
Do you mean to say that that is indeed a fallacy?
What we call the ego is just something imaginary that we antagonize – with the actual ego that scientists identify being something actually much different from the popular understanding?
I like you, fucker.
@danfontaine, I mean that after the Universal Mind told me ‘you are me’, I was totally lost for words and questions. I could have continued to ask anything but really after that answer there were no more questions. ‘Who am I’ was the question I started out with. It was the question that led me to out-of-body experiences and ultimately to me and who I truly am, which is far greater than just this one physical body.
